Scholarship Winners 2014

$2,500 – Northrup Grumman

Erica Peterson – Pleasant Valley High School, Bettendorf, Iowa

Erica is a senior at Pleasant Valley High School. She has a 4.488 GPA and an ACT score of 33. She is the Vice-President of her school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, Summit Leader for Raising Student Voice and Participation (RSVP), Section Leader for band and has been a member of the pit orchestra and participated in several honor bands. She actively participates in her school’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Erica is a Board Member for Teens for Tomorrow, and volunteers at the Putnam Museum and the Bettendorf Family Museum. She is employed part-time at the Bettendorf Fareway Store.

Erica plans to attend Iowa State University in Ames, IA majoring in Chemical Engineering.

Aspiration: Erica wants to specialize in polymers/material science and hopes to design something that will make a lasting impact.

$1,000 Scholarship – Iowa State University

Elijah Sents – Columbus Junction High School, Columbus Junction, Iowa

Elijah is a senior at Columbus Community High School and currently ranked fourth in his class with a 3.98 GPA. In school he holds several leadership roles including class vice president, NHS vice president, and FFA alumni liaison. He is also involved in varsity cross country, basketball, golf, and baseball along with quiz bowl and band. Along with being active in school, he also works for a local farmer and is active in community service and church.

He plans on attending Iowa State University and majoring in both Agriculture System Technology and Agriculture Business.

Aspiration: Elijah wants to put technology to use in agriculture to make farming safer and more efficient.

$1,000 Scholarship – University of Iowa

Hogan Knott – Pleasant Valley High School – Bettendorf, Iowa

Hogan is a senior at Pleasant Valley High School with grade point average of 4.0 and an ACT score of 31. In school, Hogan is a two year member of National Honor Society, he leads the PV Marching Band as a Drum Major and plays trombone in the Wind Symphony Concert Band. He is also actively involved in the FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Club, Soccer, and the PV Bowling Team.

Hogan plans on attending the University of Iowa and has been accepted through early admittance to the College of Engineering. He plans to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Aspiration: Hogan hopes to combine his interests in Robotics with Biomedical Engineering to improve the quality of life for people with physical and medical challenges.

$2,000 Scholarship – National Defense Industrial Association

Darci Dietrich – Geneseo High School, Geneseo, Illinois

Darci is a senior at Geneseo High School. She is ranked 3rd in her class with a 4.39 GPA and an ACT score of 32. In school, she is captain of her basketball team, student body president, and her class secretary. She also participates in soccer, mathletes, National Honor Society, Key Club, Link Crew, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Outside of school, she participates in Teens with a Gift of Foresight, a local teen philanthropy group. Darci is also an Illinois State Scholar.

Darci plans to attend the University of Illinois majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Aspiration: Darci wants to use her knowledge in Mechanical Engineering to develop products that will help those in need.

Colleen is a senior at Central Community High School. She is ranked first in her class with a 4.0 GPA and an ACT score of 30. She is active in Student Council, National Honor Society, Academic Team, Band, 4-H, and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program.

Colleen plans to attend the University of Iowa, majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a cellular engineering focus.

Aspiration: Colleen wants to conduct research to develop treatments for genetic disorders.

$2,500 Scholarship – University of Wisconsin, Platteville

Alexandrea Carter – Pleasant Valley High School, Bettendorf, Iowa

Allie is a senior at Pleasant Valley High School with a 3.9 GPA. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Pleasant Valley marching and concert bands. She participates in basketball and has a part-time job at Fareway. She is a captain on her school and club volleyball teams, and mentors young girls both in volleyball and basketball clinics/camps.

Aspiration: Allie wants to use her artistic talents to designs things through engineering.

$2,500 Scholarship – Quad City Engineering and Science Council

Dalton Howell – Columbus Junction Community High School, Columbus Junction, Iowa

Dalton is a senior at Columbus Community High School. He is ranked first in his class with a 4.0 GPA and an ACT score of 30. In school, he is the National Honors Society president, the FFA vice president, and the cross country co-captain. He is also actively involved in 4-H, varsity basketball, speech contest, Quiz Bowl, and is the percussion section leader of his schools’ marching band.

Dalton plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, and major in Civil Engineering. 

Aspiration: Dalton wants to increase our use of renewable energy sources.

$1,000 Scholarship – Western Illinois University – Quad Cities

Jacob Magnison – Abingdon Avon High School, Abingdon, Illinios

Jacob is a senior at Abingdon Avon High School. He is ranked 17th in his class with a 3.47 GPA. Jacob is a member of the Carl Sandburg College Upward Bound Program. He has served on the Student Council and participated in The Peer Tutoring Program. Jacob is a member of the Varsity Football Team and has made 1st Team All-Conference two years. He has also been team captain for four years running. Jacob is also active in several community volunteer groups and youth group.

Jacob plans to attend Western Illinois University – QC and major in Mechanical Engineering.

Aspirations: Jacob is interested in giving back to his community by designing machinery that will help others.

$1,250 Scholarship – American Society of Civil Engineers

Taylor Anderson – Rock Falls High School, Rock Falls, Illinois

Taylor is a senior at Rock Falls High School. She is ranked ninth in her class with a 4.024 GPA and an ACT score of 25. In school, she plays volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is also a member of National Honor Society and the vice-president of her class.

Taylor plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Platteville majoring in Civil Engineering.

Aspiration: Taylor wants to improve the roads we drive on and the buildings we live in.

$2,000 Scholarship – Exelon

Tyler Much – Muscatine High School, Muscatine, Iowa

Tyler Much is a senior at Muscatine Highschool, has a 3.7 GPA and scored a 26 on the ACT. Tyler is the senior class president, the technology specialist for the student council, and a 4 sport athlete. On the football field Tyler was chosen to be an offseason captain, regular season captain, and defensive captain, he is also the winner of the “best teammate” award. Outside of school Tyler works as a waiter on the weekends, and during the week holds an engineering internship for HONs product development group. Tyler is also involved in his community, and is on track to graduate with his silver cords. Many of those community service hours come from mentoring “at risk” middle school athletes. 

Tyler plans to attend Iowa State University next fall and major in computer engineering. 

Aspirations: He never wants to stop learning, and wants to help revolutionize technology in order to make improvements in people’s everyday lives. 

$1,250 Scholarship – American Society of Civil Engineers

Cody Hansen- Sterling High School, Sterling, Illinois

Cody is a senior at Sterling High School. He is ranked 4th in his class with a 4.239 GPA. He received a 28 on his ACT. He is a member of National Honor Society, science club, a member of the WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) team, and treasurer of Key Club. He runs cross country and track. He is a Jr. Rotarian, Illinois State Scholar, and an AP Scholar with Honors.

Cody will be attending the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and majoring in Civil Engineering.

Aspiration: To help design economically efficient structures.

 $1,500 Scholarship, Women in Defense (WID)

Angela Olvera, Moline High School, Moline, Illinois

Angela is a senior at Moline High School. She is ranked 18th in her class with an ACT score of 27 and a 3.923 GPA non-weighted. In school, she is Vice president and a Teen Leader of Natural Helper, Vice President and Co- Founder of Interact, Key Club Treasurer, Chairman of National Honor Society, and Link Crew Leader. She also participates in tennis, soccer, French club, and a member of the French Honor Society. She is an Illinois State Scholar.

Angela hopes to attend Washington University in St. Louis and plans on majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a pre-med focus.

Aspiration:  She wants to become a heart surgeon and discover alternative forms of care for individuals with heart conditions.

Ashten Sherman, Riverdale High School, Port Byron, Illinois

Ashten is a senior at Riverdale High School. She is ranked first of her class with a 4.0 GPA with an ACT score of 32. In school she is president of the Engineering Club, vice president of National Honor Society, treasurer of Student Council, and captain of both her school’s Scolastic Bowl Team and Track Team.

Ashten plans to attend the University of Iowa majoring in Biomedical Engineering

Asperations: Ashten wants to improve the way people live.

$1,000 Scholarship – Iowa State University

Rosalie Dubberke, Davenport West High School, Davenport Iowa

Rosalie Dubberke is 14th in her class at Davenport West High School and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is active in band, playing 3 instruments in multiple music ensembles.   Outside of school, Rosalie has been host sister to more than 10 exchange students, is a youth leader at her church, and enjoys riding motorcycles and snowmobiles with her dad.  

Rosalie will attend Iowa State University this fall and plans to major in mechanical engineering. 

Aspiration: Rosalie’s dream is to engineer zoo exhibits all over the world.

$1,000 Scholarship – Society of Automotive Engineers

Paige Lohman, Moline High School, Moline, Illinois

Paige is a senior at Moline High School. She is ranked 15th in her class with a 3.88 unweighted GPA and an ACT score of 32. In school, she participates in student congress, cheerleading, National Honor Society, Link Crew, and is Senior Class President.

Paige is also an Illinois State Scholar. Paige plans to attend the University of Mississippi majoring in engineering.

Aspiration: Paige wants to improve societies’ standards of living through engineering.
